- 1962  The Canadian Red Ensign, since 1945 officially considered "a distinctive Canadian flag," is the British merchant navy flag, the Red Ensign, with the shield of the Canadian Coat of Arms in the fly. The coat of arms was authorized in 1921; in the upper two thirds it has the arms of England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, in the lower third a sprig of maple on a silver background.
